My use of constructism in class.

On page 187 of the handout Modeling with Hypermedia I came across the term constructism. I also subscribe to the rationale that knowledge is built by the learner and not supplied by the teacher. I started introducing my students to the use of software to build presentation for the class and to save on cds for revision purposes some time ago. I am limited by the lack of resources available and the inflexibility of the timetable but this reading showed that I was on the right track although others thought otherwise!
My experience is that there is much learning taking place during the development of these projects. Students enjoy the experience unlike most things which get them bored easily. The teacher’s simply keep students on task and guides the process.

Reflections on McFarlane

After reading the McFarlane article I agree thatwe are not so far behind in implementing ICTs in the science classroom. The article also reinforced my ideas that there is so much more to be done. Providing computers is not enough and will never be. The powers that be must recognize this and act accordingly.

I believe that ICTs have muchto offer the teaching of science but must be correctly inplemented. If the initial attempt is flawed, and I fear it might be, teachers will reject it as being just another fad in a country where there is alot of money to spend.

My thoughts about the first two assignments.

The experience of completing the assignments proved beneficial to me in several ways:

The questions provided guided the process of reflection (something I usually have difficulty with). The reflection about my current practice helped me to see if I was still on track as a teacher. I have been busy with exams and work so it was a good opportunity for some reflection and renewal. I am guilty of neglecting this aspect of my practice.

The development of my initial philosophy statement helped reinforced some of my ideas about the use of ICTs in the classroom. I have always been excited about ICTs. It was due to my insistence at school that we have two computers and some software in the lab.

The ICT inventory helped me realize that we had some way to go at school in order to properly implement ICTs. I hope to be part of this process. The act of sharing the information with my fellow teachers was seen as being proactive by my principal. She was happy with her copy.
I learned that the administration is very receptive to the use of ICTs in the classroom.
